Since I’m using watercolor for my Tomb Raider contest entry, I thought this’d be a perfect opportunity to try stretching my paper to keep it from buckling. Only taping the back and/or taping down the paper has never really worked for me; my paintings are always just a little bit warped by the end. My efforts here seemed mostly successful but some of the sheets ended up a little warped anyway. Still, it’s certainly no worse than if I’d painted without stretching first! Next time I’ll only use my masonite board and I’ll get some brown gum tape to use in place of masking tape. (The method I used in short: soak paper in cold water until floppy, lay on board and sponge off excess moisture, tape the sides, then let dry.)

Started priming the matryoshka set @gekkedame gave me for Christmas :D The second doll has a mismatched top and bottom (the top is too big and falls off) for some reason but I’ll manage. I’m using gesso for the initial primer. It’s got some tooth to it so I’m considering using a fine-tooth sandpaper to smooth it out before proceeding to paint a layer of white acrylic as a base.

I’m not sure what I will paint on these yet. My most prominent idea has been to paint each of the native Japanese dogs from Ainu Inu to Shikoku Inu. I’ve had a few other ideas too, though, so I’ll keep thinking about it until I’m actually ready to start designing the images.
